Are you concerned about the social causes of distress that get overlooked when we locate the ‘problem in the person’ with a medical diagnosis? Would you like to join like-minded individuals in a friendly down-to-earth space to share ideas and discuss how we can preserve the person-centred nature of our practice while swimming in a sea of diagnostic labels and language?
Then why not come along to be a part of a new community and networking group: Non-pathologising therapists of Ireland @ Monday 25th November 2024 at 7pm-8.30pm (online). This is an online group that will be held once a month (or thereabouts).
This first meeting will be a chance to meet one another and collectively decide how we might use this space and community to support one another and build a supportive community. A little bit about me: I am a person-centred and experiential therapist working in Dublin. I am inspired by ‘A Disorder for Everyone!’ movement (led by Jo Watson) and the Non-Pathologising Therapy Group run by the UK’s Person-Centred Association’s Jules Elliott, and I wanted to create a community of like-minded counselling professionals in Ireland where we can come together in an Irish context. Originally from the UK but living here with my Irish partner since 2017, I did my counselling and psychotherapy training at Turning Point in Dublin and for my dissertation I did a qualitative study asking the question ‘how does psychiatric diagnosis and the language of “disorder” shape humanistic counselling practice?’
Suggested format will be as follows:
-
Invitation to introduce ourselves
-
Invitation to share a little about our personal philosophy around non-pathologising of distress
-
Discussion and debate around how we see this playing out in our practice, personal life, and society
-
Sharing of ideas and resources
-
Invitation for individual participants to present or facilitate discussions on relevant topics of their choice
