I. Her
I don’t recognise her
But I know who she is
And I know what she did
I don’t recognise her
But I feel what she felt
And I know why she hid
I can’t accept her
She’s all that I hate
I’ve tried to escape her
But she carries such weight
I look back with guilt
And I carry her shame
I want to forgive her,
But I hand her the blame.
II. The Same
She screams
The only way to get my attention
She’s hurting
I hear her crying with intention
For me to finally listen
To recognise her desperation
But I meet her with silence
Causing that familiar devastation
It hurts to look at her
To see her staring back
Like looking in a mirror
Though this one is cracked
I’ve spent so long running
Sweeping her under the rug
Feeling nothing but contempt
When what she needs is a hug
It wasn’t her fault
How unfair of me to blame
It’s not her fault
She and I are the same
It wasn’t my fault.
